Argania: Lack of Information Is My Family History represents Maryam Touzani’s search for lost heritage. Inspired by absence, with little to no information about her family’s past, she embarked on a speculative journey to uncover new information, threading through both her Moroccan ancestry and her multicultural upbringing. With its deep roots hidden beneath the soil, the Argan tree – an emblem of Morocco whose fruits have been harvested for centuries, often by Amazigh women – becomes a symbol of the artist’s endeavour, lending its name to the project’s title. 

Here, Touzani’s project unfolds from an unlikely departure point: her teeth. A carrier of her own unique genetic coding, they gesture at an irrefutable ‘proof’ in the scheme of an otherwise uncertain identity: dental X-rays are deployed as one of several pieces of ‘evidence’ in a poetic photographic dossier, alongside passport images, Touzani’s father’s death certificate, and even colonial maps – which themselves fall short of referencing her ancestors’ home region. As in many of her projects, Touzani’s creative approach is both a means to reconstruct the past and to conjure a new, imaginative future, giving colour to a blank space.
